Sorting stops by place in acoustic space

Degree of separation of place of articulation for stop consonants was compared between the locus equation and a metric solely based on F2/F3 release. Three male Swedish speakers produced CV sequences in variable speaking conditions. While considerable overlap was observed in LE space, place separation was improved using the alternative metric in combination with VOT. The result suggested that place information for stop consonants is conveyed more robustly by perceptually integrated, acoustic properties of individual utterances than in terms of relational processing of the LE type.
